Maldives to increase TGST, Green Tax and Airpot Taxes
Maldives government has proposed to increase the Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST), Green tax and Airport taxes. Here's a breakdown of the proposed amendments:
1. Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) Increase:
The TGST, currently at 16%, is proposed to increase to 17% effective June 1, 2024.
This marks the second TGST increase in recent years, following the rise from 8% to 16% in January 2023.
2. Green Tax Hike:
The Green Tax, levied on tourist accommodations, will double.
Guesthouses with fewer than 50 rooms will see an increase from $3 to $6 per person per night.
Larger establishments, including resorts and city hotels, will face an increase from $6 to $12 per person per night.
These changes come into effect in January 2024.
Notably, children under two years of age will be exempt from the Green Tax.
3. Airport Departure Tax Adjustments:
Departure fees for various passenger categories will be revised, with implementation planned from 1 December 2024.
Economy class travelers (foreigners only): $30 to $50
Business class passengers: $60 to $120
First class passengers: $90 to $240
Private jet passengers: $120 to $480
