Maldives to increase TGST, Green Tax and Airpot Taxes

Maldives government has proposed to increase the Tourism Goods  and Services Tax (TGST), Green tax and Airport taxes. Here's a breakdown of the proposed amendments: 

1. Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) Increase:

  • The TGST, currently at 16%, is proposed to increase to 17% effective June 1, 2024.

  • This marks the second TGST increase in recent years, following the rise from 8% to 16% in January 2023.

2. Green Tax Hike:

  • The Green Tax, levied on tourist accommodations, will double.

    • Guesthouses with fewer than 50 rooms will see an increase from $3 to $6 per person per night.

    • Larger establishments, including resorts and city hotels, will face an increase from $6 to $12 per person per night.

  • These changes come into effect in January 2024.

  • Notably, children under two years of age will be exempt from the Green Tax.

3. Airport Departure Tax Adjustments:

  • Departure fees for various passenger categories will be revised, with implementation planned from 1 December 2024.

    • Economy class travelers (foreigners only): $30 to $50

    • Business class passengers: $60 to $120

    • First class passengers: $90 to $240

    • Private jet passengers: $120 to $480
