Immigrant Work Permit Fees to be Reviewed Every 18 Months

The Maldives Parliament has approved an amendment to the Employment Act, granting the relevant ministry the authority to review work permit fees for immigrant workers every 18 months.

This amendment, proposed by the government, enables ministries to adjust fees regularly based on prevailing economic and labor conditions. To safeguard against abrupt increases in the cost of employing foreign labor, any fee increase is capped at 30% of existing rates.

Additionally, the amendments allow the government to impose a fine of up to MVR 50,000 on employers found guilty of negligence in their responsibilities towards migrant workers.
