Employment Act Amendments Take Effect

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified an amendment to the Employment Act, imposing a fine of MVR 50,000 per person for employers who neglect expatriate workers. The amendment also allows the Cabinet to determine the maximum number of expatriate workers from a specific country, a change from the previous limit of 100,000. The amendment also defines employer requirements, including registration of work sites, seeking permits, applying for quotas, and obtaining work permits. The regulations must be compiled and published within three months of ratification.
