Government Puts Off Reopening of Guesthouses

The Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen states the Government intends to delay reopening of guesthouses in the Maldives to September 2020.In response to this decision, Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) and several guesthouse owners has expressed concern over incurring possible losses for cancellation of bookings which have already been made after the initial reopening date was set to 1 August 2020. Additionally, GAM goes on to state that such a decision is detrimental to the up and coming local tourism industry.A specific date for reopening will be fixed and announced after conducting a proper assessment of the Covid-19 situation on 15 August 2020.
